The Voyage of The Rosebud
In the late 1930s Newlyn was under threat.
Penzance Borough Council had received orders
from Westminster to demolish all sub-standard
housing and replace it with council built homes.
Much of Newlyn was under threat of compulsory
purchase.
Many of the villagers would have to
move to the top of Chywoon Hill. Lots didn’t want
to go.
This is the story of a battle against beaurocracy
and the simple idea which galvanised the Press
and generated a wave of popular feeling throughout
the Nation. An ‘Armada of One’ would set sail and
take the batle right to the enemy’s stronghold.
This play for voices, written to celebrate the 70th aniversary of the voyage of the Rosebud in October 2007, needs little more than a stage and eight or so performers. It is written to be given as a rehearsed reading. Individual scripts are available for £4.50+ p&p .
Performance Licence
If you would like to give public performances then a licence will be necessary. The licence comes with a set of ten play scripts and costs £70.00+ p&p. A licence is valid for three performances on consecutive days.
