Cornish

Folk & Fairy

A Collection of New andTraditional Stories

Written by Randle Hurley

Illustrated by Sara Jenkins

Here is a mixture of wonderful old Cornish drolls, re-told for a modern readership, and new stories about real and imagined happenings in the county.  In Victorian times our folklore was under threat because the droll tellers who kept the stories alive were dying out. Keen, scholarly collectors sought out and recorded the old tales but they sanitised them for their Victorian readers. The rude bits were cut out but the repetitive stuff was retained and presented in flowery Victorian prose. The tales, which had adapted to the needs of each new generation of storytellers and their listeners, were frozen on the page for a hundred and fifty years. It is time to set the stories free to adapt to changing times and new audiences, hence this new collection.

Sarah Strick

A Collection of Stories About a Cornish Character

This collection of stories is set in a row of cottages at the top of Causewayhead in Penzance. Sarah, her husband Jacca and her aunt Emma Polmere, not one of them under seventy, shared the tiny cottage and lived through their adventures in the years between the two world wars in the last century.

Perhaps the trio didn’t deserve to have the peace of their twilight years shattered so often by un-sought for adventures. Maybe Sarah shouldn’t have struggled so hard to preserve appearances. Jacca might have put his foot down with a firmer hand from time to time. It might have helped if they had kept less interesting company but adventures they had and here are the details of them for you to enjoy.

This is an ideal gift for a Cornish exile, or for that matter for a Cornish person still living in the county.

Jan Stone's Cook Book

This was the first book in our collection. What a shame it had to be this one, just when we want to make a good impression!

Don't expect Cordon Blue recipes. These are anarchic! Mind you, all the recipes work if you have the nerve to try them. This is pure entertainment, Jan Stone style, with new epicurean experiences and Jan's life style advice thrown in for good measure. Illustrations are by Susannah Clemence who runs the Strand Cafe in Newlyn and, while reserving judgement on some of the dishes, she enthusiastically endorses the advice on washing up.
